Chiniot Steel Mill:: A Fantasy or Reality??

The recent discovery of iron ore deposits in Chiniot has sent the Punjab government into a tizzy. The CM has declared that his government will build the largest steel mill in the world in Chiniot. The fact that the middling steel mill in Bin Qasim, Karachi has been operating with fits and starts ever since it came into being doesn’t seem to have crossed anybody’s mind. How we are going to build the biggest steel mill in the world and relegate South Korea into second place is beyond me. Presumably, we have a magic wand lying somewhere which has yet to be put to use.

Pipsqueaks that we are, we have this strange proclivity of always wanting to punch above our weight. First it was the bullet train that had our top guns levitating until ground realities brought them back to mother earth. Now it is the largest steel mill in the world. Where will it end? Wouldn’t it be so much better if we could divert some of our energy towards bettering the lives of our unfortunate brethren dying of hunger, disease and malnutrition in the sands of Thar, Cholistan and elsewhere? It would. But that would require a reordering of priorities – something that is alien to our genius.
